We are pleased to announce that we've been awarded £300 from Stockport Hydro towards the reusable coffee cup scheme that will be coming very soon. Along with the money we have been awarded by Stockport Council, we have enough funding to buy a stock of sturdy, stylish, reusable cups for Marple cafes and shops to use in place of unsustainable, disposable takeaway cups. Watch this space!

Aiming to reduce single use plastics in Marple

Plastic Free Marple is a voluntary group of Marple community members that have an interest in protecting the environment by reducing our community's reliance on single use plastic. One of our core aims is to reduce the negative impact that plastic waste has on our local environment (in particular the green spaces and waterways in the Marple area).

Plastic Free Marple

We meet as a group to plan events, run a Facebook Group to share advice within the community, and plan positive changes that we can make in the community. We have taken inspiration from Plastic Free Communities (a campaign run by Surfers Against Sewage) and adapted those ideas to suit and benefit the community of Marple. Many of our members are also members of Climate Action Marple (CAM), and we consider ourselves to be in line with their policies/constitution.

Festival cups and reusabled coffee cup schemes

This Spring, we will be rolling out our festival cup scheme, providing a stock of smart, reusable festival cups in place of disposable pint cups, for use during Marple events. This has been funded by donations from the community, as well as Marple Beer Run, Make It Marple and The Marple Website.

Also coming this Spring...we are setting up a reusable takeaway coffee cup scheme, in which cafes will be offering customers the chance to borrow a returnable takeaway cup in place of a disposable one. For this to happen we are pleased to have been granted funds from Stockport Council and Stockport Hydro.

Both projects will mean a huge reduction in the amount of non-recyclable waste going to landfill and polluting our oceans, as well as less litter in Marple!

We are grateful to Lentils and Lather, who are involved with the planning of both projects, have offered us space to meet (in their very comfortable meeting rooms upstairs, available to hire out!), and will be the first to offer our reusable coffee cups when they arrive.
