Public speaking competition for school children
The final for our first Public Speaking Competition will take place on Tuesday 13th March at Chapel-en-le-Frith Golf Club. The finalists will include Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections with topics covering The Ocean’s Plight, The Definition of Normal, The Art of Living in the Here and Now and Dependence on Technology is Making Humanity less Intelligent. During February Astronomer, Ian Morrison came to speak to us on the Aurora Borealis and Solar and Lunar Eclipses.
He has been on several cruises that have taken him to the best areas for seeing this spectacle and has also travelled to see a couple of Solar Eclipses.
Two weeks later Phil Turner gave us a talk on the Proton Beam therapy Centre being run by the NHS at The Christie Hospital in Manchester which to start with will be used for the treatment for Children with Cancers. Phil showed us the progress of the special building needed to house the units and described the basic workings of the system. The project is a huge undertaking which had involved years of planning, preparation and fundraising and has been backed up by £250m of UK government money, to fund two centres, in Manchester and at London's University College Hospital. Phil and his colleagues are very committed to this project and so he and several of his colleagues from the NHS undertook to climb Kilimanjaro for this worthwhile project.
In March Mr Fred Walker from Alzheimer’s Research will come to tell us about the different types of Dementia and loss of Memory.
Our Charter Night will be held on 22nd March at Hazel Grove Golf Club.
